A Logical Typology of Normative Systems

چکیده
In this paper, the set-theoretic approach in the logical theory of normative systems is extended using Broome’s definition of the normative code function. The syntax and semantics for first order metanormative language is defined, and metanormative language is applied in the formalization of the basic principles in Broome’s approach and in the construction of a logical typology of normative systems. Special attention is given to the types of normative systems which are not definable in terms of the properties of singular sets of requirements (e.g. the realization equivalence of codes, the social compatibility of codes, and the compatibility of codes issued by different normative sources). Examples are given of the application of the typology in the interpretation of philosophical texts. Von Wright’s hypothesis on the connection of logical properties of normative systems, conceived set-theoretically, with standard deontic logic is proved by introducing the translation function between the metanormative language and the restricted language of standard deontic logic. The translation reveals that von Wright’s hypothesis must be appended. The problems of narrow and wide scope readings of the deontic conditionals and of the meaning of iterated deontic operators are addressed using the distinction between relative and absolute normative codes. The theorem on the existence of a realization equivalent absolute code for any relative code is proved.

Normative positions in multi-agent systems
The Kanger-Lindahl theory of normative positions has great potential of serving as a logical foundation for normative systems for MAS, and its generality allows for great freedom when interpreting the theory. As a first step towards a typology of interpretations of the theory, the application of normative positions is studied in the context of a class of transition systems in which transitions ...
متن کاملOn the Multimodal Logic of Elementary Normative Systems
We introduce Multimodal Logics of Normative Systems as a contribution to the development of a general logical framework for reasoning about normative systems over logics for Multi-Agent Systems. Given a multimodal logic L, with standard Kripke semantics, for every modality 2i and normative system η, we expand the language adding a new modality 2ηi with the intended meaning of 2 η i φ being "φ i...
متن کاملNavigating Between Stealth Advocacy and Unconscious Dogmatism: The Challenge of Researching the Norms, Politics and Power of Global Health
Global health research is essentially a normative undertaking: we use it to propose policies that ought to be implemented. To arrive at a normative conclusion in a logical way requires at least one normative premise, one that cannot be derived from empirical evidence alone. But there is no widely accepted normative premise for global health, and the actors with the power to set policies may use...
متن کاملTrust and Norms in the Context of Computer Security: A Logical Formalization
In this paper we present a logical model of trust in which trust is conceived as an expectation of the truster about some properties of the trustee. A general typology of trust is presented. We distinguish trust in the trustee’s action from trust in the trustee’s disposition (motivational or normative disposition); positive trust from negative trust. A part of the paper is devoted to the formal...
متن کاملPersonality, pathology and mindsets: part 1 - agency, personality and mindscapes
Purpose – This paper aims to develop a new socio-cognitive theory of the normative personality of a plural agency like, for instance, an organisation or a political system. This cybernetic agency theory is connected to Bandura’s theory of psychosocial function. The agency is adaptive and has a normative personality that operates through three formative personality traits, the function of which ...
